Every child deserves to grow up with nurturing relationships, positive experiences and hope for the future. Child Abuse Prevention Month (CAP Month) is an opportunity for communities across North Carolina to come together and take action in creating the conditions for positive childhoods. This year’s statewide CAP Month theme, “Positive Childhoods Start with Us,” emphasizes the role that each of us plays in building communities where every child and family can meet their full potential. Since 2008, Pinwheels for Prevention® has helped Prevent Child Abuse America (Positive Childhood Alliance NC’s parent chapter) and its chapter network shape conversations around effective child maltreatment prevention strategies nationwide. The pinwheel is a symbol of the bright, joyful, and happy childhoods all children deserve.
Pinwheel planting ceremonies have brought together organizations, business leaders, advocates, legislators, and families across the state in recognition of CAP Month. Together, we’ve utilized the pinwheel to uplift the importance of building strong foundations to create a brighter future for all North Carolina children.
The pinwheel remains the national symbol of child maltreatment prevention. It is captured in the national 2026 CAP Month campaign collateral through imagery and physical pinwheels will continue to be available for purchase directly from the national pinwheel distributor, American Business Solutions.
